If I was doing some critical research where the consequences of my results could mean the difference between life or death, which significance level would I want to choose and why?

Answer #1

If you were doing a critical research such that any consequences of your results could mean the difference between life or death, then you should use the significance level as small as possible, because if you use very small significance level, you will get more accurate decisions regarding to rejecting or do not rejecting null hypothesis. For this scenario, you should not use regular 5% or 1% level of significance. You should use 0.5% (α = 0.005) or less significance level. By doing this, you can minimize the type I error and type II error.

I am doing a biology research project where I collected data on different birds visiting a bird feeder. The data I collected was: 13 sparrows, 10 finches, 7 cardinals, 5 robins, 5 chickadees, and 4 bluejays. I want to pose the question "Is one species more likely to visit the feeder than the others?" or "Does one species visit the feeder more than the others?" What kind of statistical test would I use to do this? (ex: chi-square goodness of...

A medical resident doing research wants to know if the mean heart rate after a particular type of trauma differs from the healthy population rate of 72 beats/min. They consider a mean difference of 6 beats/min to be clinically meaningful. They also choose 9.1 beats/min as the variation based on a previously published study. How many patients will be needed to carry out the study at 0.0005% significance and 82% power?

According to my records, the population of all past assignment grades have a mean (μ) of 42 points and standard deviation (σ) of 5 points. The new class of 81 students had a mean grade (M) of 43 points. I conducted a hypothesis test to see if the new class would perform significantly differently from the population of past students. I was interested in any type of “difference,” whether it’s an improvement or a decrease in assignment grade. The significance...

It has come to my attention that for some spurious reason I can both observe where my daughter is and apparently not be confused over her velocity at a given moment. Estimate the uncertainty in her position as I might observe it, and, given this, estimate the uncertainty in her speed. Why is this sort of uncertainty not a concern, say, when you do experiments in General Physics and analyze them based on Newtonian Physics?
