Here, we are trying to analyze the correlation between 2 binary variables: Sex and binary variable representing the presence or absence of pain.

Note that pearson and spearman test are used to find correlation of continuous variables. Biserial correlation is used to find correlation between 2 variables: one binary and the other continuous.

The phi correlation coefficient is used to find the correlation by tabulation ( like a confusion matrix) for 2 binary variables. Therefore phi correlation is the required method here.
