was walking in New Orleans one time, and there was a booth that asked if I wanted to play a game. The game was that I had to flip a coin and a die. If the coin landed on tails and I rolled a six, then I won. Any other outcome was a loss. Would you play? Why or why not? What's the likelihood that you win?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There are 6 possible outcomes for the dice and 2 possible outcome for coin

So, there is a total of 12 outcomes when we first flip coin and then rolled the dice.

{(H,1),(H,2),(H,3),(H,4),(H,5),(H,6),(T,1),(T,2),(T,3),(T,4),(T,5),(T,6)}

here H means Heads and T means tails

Favourable outcome is only 1, i.e. getting a tails and then rolling a six on dice, (T,6) and total outcome is 12

So, probability = (favourable outcome)/(total outcome) = 1/12 = 0.0833

I will not play this game because probability of winning is 1 out of 12 or 0.0833, which is very small as compared to probability of losing the game.

Conducting a Simulation For example, say we want to simulate the probability of getting “heads” exactly 4 times in 10 flips of a fair coin. One way to generate a flip of the coin is to create a vector in R with all of the possible outcomes and then randomly select one of those outcomes. The sample function takes a vector of elements (in this case heads or tails) and chooses a random sample of size elements. coin <- c("heads","tails")...
