Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist. She is known for her refusing to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger which spurred the Montgomery boycott and various other efforts to end segregation. This left the city of Montgomery with no choice but to lift the law requiring segregation on public buses. She was inducted into Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame. In 1979, the NAACP awarded Rosa Parks the Spingarn Medal, their highest honor, and the following year, she was presented with the Martin Luther King Jr. Award. In 1996, President Bill Clinton presented Rosa Parks with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 1999, she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Parks received many other awards including the Candace Award (1984), the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award (1992) and the International Freedom Conductor Award (1999).
