Susan Brownell Anthony was an American social reformer and women's rights activist was born February 15, 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts. She was brought up in a Quaker family having long activist traditions. Hence she played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage movement. In 1863 Anthony and Stanton organized a Women's National Loyal League to support and petition the Thirteenth Amendment outlawing slavery. In 1997 the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award was established by the Susan B.Anthony Center for honoring and celebrating those women whose lives have been enriched by their years at the University of Rochester and who have, in turn, inspired other women to advance and lead.
