What critical gap in knowledge regarding brain function surprises you?
In my view, how consciousness functions poses the greatest mystery. Consciousness, despite its immense complexity, appears to us a singular and unified experience. Yet, the physiological mechanisms that produce it are not fully known. What has been observed is that content of consciousness is based in different brain regions. The decision as to which sensory impressions will reach our consciousness is not made by a single region. Instead, neurons from different regions must cooperate for this purpose.
