Describe 2 separate pieces of evidence indicating that the hippocampus plays a key role in spatial memory.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Remembering a place in the environment via the hippocampus takes place by associating a sensory stimulus with a specific action. Studies with rodents have shown that several neurons in the hippocampus behave as place cells that show activity when the animal passes through a specific part of its environment. Furthermore, the significance of the hippocampus to spatial memory is also illustrated by the severe disruption in the learning of goal location and navigation to the goal that occurs when the hippocampus is damaged.

The three main areas for memory in the brain involve the Hippocampus, the Basal Ganglia, and the Cerebral Cortex. Explain the types of memory that occur in each of these areas and describe what behaviors or cognitive deficits would result from damage in these areas.   Describe where Broca’s area and Wernicke’s areas are located in the brain. There is some evidence indicating that REM sleep, associated with dreaming, may also play a role in learning and memory processing. For example, Smith and Lapp (1991) found increased REM activity for college students during exam periods. Suppose that REM activity for a sample of 16 students during the final exam period produced an average score of M = 143. Regular REM activity for college students averages µ = 110 with a standard deviation of σ  = 50. Do these data...

Would you agree with the statement that the centrosome plays a key role in determining the rates of lengthening and shortening of the microtubules of an animal cell? Why or why not? ** The centrosome is the site of microtubule nucleation and synthesis so I agree that it helps create them and lengthening them to some extent but does it help in shortening them? This is the part i'm not sure off, if I look at the kinetochore where subunits...
