What is the role of spirituality in wellness? How can it enhance wellness? How can it hinder wellness?
Spirituality is the act of getting connected to a higher spirit or entity through certain acts such as singing, dancing, praying, meditating etc. The meaning of spirituality differs from person to person. Those who are spiritual would be very positive thus their thoughts, actions and reactions would be positive. This would reduce the stress in them thus leading to mental wellness. Spiritual people consider their physical body as God’s dwelling place, so they would do yoga, meditation and other exercises in order to keep themselves physically healthy. Spiritual people would also be considerate about others and they would reduce their needs in order to fulfill others’ needs thus finding happiness. They would always engage in actions that would bring more happiness to themselves and others. All these factors help in the physical and mental wellness of spiritual people. At times, if spirituality is attached to religion, one would looked down on people from other religions and thus would engage in negative activities.
