Much of the discussion around PTSD recently has been associated with veterans. What makes this population vulnerable to PTSD?
Any individual who has undergone a traumatic and life-threatening experience is at risk of developing PTSD. Veterans are an even more vulnerable population because have lived through an extremely violent and traumatic event such as war that caused them to fear greatly for their lives, experience the worst horror of humanity, and feel utterly helpless. Serving in the war is not a one-time event but spans over a long duration of time. Veterans are therefore repeatedly exposed to trauma. Strong emotions caused by the event create changes in the brain that may result in PTSD.
