There is no theory as such based upon this. But in early mankind these non verbal cues must have been arose out of primary things such running in case of danger, search for shelter, search for food, attracting a opposite sex etc.

For eg when fire was discovered the surprise as well as danger symbol,then expression of fear ,making big eyes etc

Incase of hunt of animal, running behind the animal,if the animal is caught, makeing the yes symbol by closing ?.

And for attracting a opposite sex, asking him or her to come, attracting by eyes, . movements gestures etc
