What is the Allegory of the Cave? What is Plato trying to describe about human existence using this allegory?
Plato in his Cave Allegory brings out the ignorance of people and the need to break the bonds that binds them to the cave thus preventing them from seeing the reality. People in their ignorance believe shadows to be real because they were not able to see the real light in the cave allegory it’s the fire that projects images on the wall. Because they are not able to break free of their chains, they believe the perceived images to be free. He also says that philosophers break free from the chains and so they are able to see the reality which they tell others in the cave and bring them to real light of knowledge and truth. Finally according to Plato, if one needs to see the world with a fresh outlook, one needs to come out of their narrow mind-set and start to perceive things without any prejudice.
