According to Anderson, in low income, high poverty neighborhoods there is a struggle between what society sees as a decent family and street family. The decent family culture is made up of middle-class values and ideas and is characterized by politeness, obedience, and respect for authority. On the other hand, the street family culture is an anti-establishment culture which believes that violence drugs, crimes, and prison are normal and things that are respected.
