You have been selected to be the Warden of a correctional facility that is currently under construction. A transition team, with a budget and support staff, has been assembled. The Commissioner has directed you to lead the team to ensure that you meet the target date for opening which is six months away. The team will be responsible to develop an operations manual; develop a staffing pattern; hire staff; train staff; prepare a furnishing and equipment (f&e) list, with purchase orders; and to establish a Community Relations Committee. What style of leadership do you think will be the most effective? Why?
I would go with transactional leadership considering the time limit and managing people from different work areas. This type leadership gets things done on time in an expected manner through rewards and punishments through supervision, organisation and performance. Since it’s a new facility that’s been developed and time bound I would also use as much rewards as possible for people who work hard and get things done on time. I would set clear directions as how to work and what should be the outcomes each day.
