Recall a situation in which you were offered a suggestion, advice, or criticism, and you reacted defensively. What caused your reaction? What were the outcomes of your defensive communication? How could you have prevented a defensive response?
Quite recently, my teacher critiqued my assignment on several grounds and offered suggestions as to how I can improve it. Although her criticisms were valid, I felt extremely upset and immediately began to think of all the factors that lead to my poor performance. I concluded that it was due to external circumstances did not allow me to produce quality work and expressed the same to my teacher as well. Therefore, instead of accepting her critique, I responded by blaming situational factors that lead to it.
My teacher communicated to me that she understood my limitations but expected me to overcome them and find ways to work around them in the future. I realised soon after that I should have accepted her comments as is, and assured her of a better outcome in the future.
