Question

what is meant by social construction of race

what is meant by social construction of race

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Social constructionism is a theory of knowledge that examines the development of jointly constructed understandings of the world that forms the basis for shared assumptions about reality.

Race is a social construct as it has no gene or cluster of genes common to any racial background. Therefore race is socially constructed and it appears to be natural to people who accept it but may or may not represent reality, so it remains an invention of a given society. Had race been biological, racial classification would remain constant across boundaries.
