A 5-year-old girl has some mild food aversions. She enjoys having the same book read to her at night but does not become terribly upset if her mother asks her to choose a different book. She occasionally spins around excitedly when her favorite show is on. She generally likes her toys neatly arranged in bins but is only mildly upset when her sister leaves them on the floor. Autism spectrum disorder would involve the 5 year girl displaying erratic behaviours such as not paying attention to what her mother is saying- being lost in her own world, inability to listen and follow instructions. While she shows some peculiar habits such as reading the same book each night and arranging toys in the bin, she is not extremely disturbed when she is unable to engage in these acts or get the desired outcome. Her unease with her sister’s spellings the toys is rather mild and normal for children of her age.
