One of the major differences between a local police chief and a sheriff is that the sheriff is elected, while the police chief is appointed. What are some of the possible problems with having a law enforcement official who, like any other politician, is responsible to voters? What are some of the possible benefits of this situation?
Possible problems:
-Sherrifs do not always posses law related qualifications ( as
formal qualifictions to get elected is not compulsary at many
places) tand this may not help public matters effectively
- duties of Sherrif are not specified by constitution ( U.S.
constitution) and there is some confusion regarding this which may
inable public to approch sherrif in matters for which they infact
could be approched.
Possible benefits:
-public has more trust on elected officials
-while duties of appointed officials like that of the police is
restricted within the boundaries of the city taht have been
appointed for, duties of elected officials like sherrif extends
with the country they are responsible for
-Offices of elected officials are mandated while but tht of the
police are not
