Johannes Muller suggested that it’s not just the external stimuli that are important but the neural pathway through which the stimuli are taken are also equally important. He explained the concept as, although all the sense organs experience the same stimulus, they all react to it differently. He proved that with his famous example of pressing the eyes with the palms of the hands, in which, one organ takes the pressing as flashes of light while the other takes it as pain and yet another takes it as irritation.
