Most of us were lucky enough to grow up around people who cared about us – people who spent time with us and helped us develop a secure attachment style. However, many children around the world did not have that luxury.

Watch The Tragedy of Orphanages (Time: 10:41; cc available). Orphanages can cause irreparable damage to a child’s ability to form attachments early on. In this talk, Georgette Mulheir gravely describes the tragedy of orphanages and urges us to end our reliance on them, by finding alternate ways of supporting children in need.

One of the solutions that Mulheir suggests is to divert resources from large institutions and provide them to families and communities in order to improve the lives of these forgotten children. For this discussion, pretend that you have been put in charge of educating one of these small community groups on how to keep families together.

In your initial post, respond to the following prompts:

Briefly explain the major emotional developments of infants and how they impact future development.

Make at least three (3) specific suggestions for community programs to assist parents to help ensure families stay together and promote healthy emotional development. Be sure to explain how these suggestions will impact emotional development.
