Discusses the beliefs and assumptions that gender role expectations have on an individual’s sexual experience.
The beliefs and assumptions that gender role expectations have
on an individual’s sexual experience employ those sets of behaviors
as rules to be applied to all males and females. Women have
traditionally been regarded as more delicate and compassionate than
men. Stereotypes for femininity include expectations to be
domestic, warm, pretty, emotional, dependent, physically weak, and
passive in western society. By contrast, men are thought of as
being more competitive and less emotional than women. Masculinity
stereotypes are described as being unemotional, physically strong,
independent, active, and aggressive. These stereotypes affect the
sexual behavior such as who is expected to initiate the sexual
behavior. Generally due to the stereotypes the male is supposed to
initiate and engage in sexual behavior first.
