Stereotypes form the underlying basis for prejudice. The use of stereotypes is a major way in which we simplify our social world, since they reduce the amount of processing we have to do when we meet a new person. Our cognitive systems would suffer an overload if we did not have pre-existing categorisations of social information. Because stereotyping is an essential component about how we think about the world, it is highly likely that prejudice cannot stop.
