From late 19th century to early 20th century a philosophical movement that changed the cultural trends in societies of the Western world is known as modernism. Modern society(industrial) and cities with rapidly increasing growth played important role in the development of modernism.

Modernism rejected religious beliefs and concept of enlightenment.

Modernism contains self-consciousness, new experimental forms, new techniques in painting, literature, architecture, music etc.

On the other hand, postmodernism emerges after world war 2.

Main features of postmodernism are the attitude of rejection for modernism ideology. It also questions the enlightenment concept. Rationalism and ultra reality is one of the main characteristics of postmodernism.

Hence, When someone says, "I tell it the way it is", that person speaking from more of a postmodern perspective.
