1. (a) Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim, a sociologist developed the theory of suicide relating with the theory of social constraint that emphasized on the relationship between suicide and lack of social attachment. He stated that suicide is not exhibited by the individual itself, but by something powerful than them and that power is social and not psychological.
2. (b) Positive
The mechanisms that have a social control are called as sanctions. It could either be positive or negative. In a positive sanction an individual is provided with rewards, whereas in a negative sanction an individual is provided with punishments. For example, receiving a promotion is an example of positive sanction because it is a reward.
3. (a) Structural functionalism
In sociology, structural functionalism is a theory that emphasizes on the relationship between different social institutions like the government, law, schools, hospitals and organizations by explaining the way it functions. Functionalists believe that deviance plays an important role in challenging unjust laws and policies by bringing people's attention towards it.
4. (b) Conflict
Conflict theories states that crime and deviance are caused by social and economic factors. It focuses on the inequality in the society such as in gender, race, religion, distribution of wealth and the criminal behaviors that occur in the society. The civil rights movements is an example of conflict because it as based on the inequality in rights of the African Americans.
5. (a) Structural functionalism
When someone engages in a criminal behavior, the judicial system punishes them and it also reminds others that, if they engage in such criminal behaviors they would also be punished. Therefore deviance is functional because it reminds people about what is just and what would happen it they engage in injustice behaviors.
6. (b) Conflict
One of the focus of the conflict theory is the inequality in the society based on socioeconomic factors because the society was divided in to bourgeois and proletariat. More power and wealth were taken by the bourgeois, whereas the proletariats remained the workers who were dependent on the bourgeois. This led to the widening of the wealth gap.
7. (b) Social disorganization theory
This theory states that the society that has the weak social ties and lacked social control had more criminal behaviors. People who grew up in a society that had more criminal behaviors like drug abuse, violence, delinquency or theft were more deviant than those who grew up in a more positive environment.
8. (a) Correlation
Correlation refers to the relationship between two variables. The correlation is positive when increase or decrease in one variable increase or decreases the other variable respectively. When increase in one variable decreases the other or the vice versa, then it is negative correlation.
