Q/ Why is it important to study sports reporting ?

One of the major columns in any media today, may it be print or digital, is sports news. More people watch, play, discuss and critically analyze sports at various levels. People treat sports as one of the most important parts of their lives. This is also because they are becoming more health-conscious. Games and sports between countries such as World Championships, Olympics, and Commonwealth etc. attract more audience around the world and it’s the effectiveness of the news content and the way it is presented will persuade more people to read those reports.

As a journalist, it’s more important to study sports reporting because it’s not just about reporting the sports as it happens or taking one side because one loves a club or a team but because they take a stand of a referee and report authentically. Again, that’s only part of the reporting but the main thing is about learning about the sports persons, interviewing them and critically examining the results.

One needs to do lots background research before writing one’s report because adding additional information will add value to one’s report. People normally become specialists in any one of the sports thus becoming masters of their trade. They need to keep all the information at their finger print about that sports. One should also patiently sit and watch the game as it happens in order to bring the news alive to the readers. A sports reporter needs to attend interviews, media meetings and other events related to sports in order to capture maximum elements related to the sports on and off the field.

The opportunities for a sports reporter is abundant in the world and they have more avenues to work today than ever before such as, newspaper, television, online media, blogging, YouTube etc. but the competition is equally high in the media too. So, in order to be on the safer side, one needs to equip oneself with the much needed skills that would help them become a competent sports reporter not just on the domestic side but also on the international side.
