How is conformity a way of resolving cognitive dissonance in the types of situations we are discussing this week?
Cognitive dissonance theory states that any inconsistency between the attitude and the behavior of an individual causes disharmony and discomfort resulting into an alteration of those ideas, beliefs and attitudes to reduce discomfort.
Conformity on the other hand is the change in attitude, beliefs or ideas as a result of social influence in order to fit in the group.
People generally agree with the majority in a group context beacuse individuals seek the need for affiliation, positive self concept and accuracy. Thus, holding conflicting beliefs gives a sign of hestitation and thoughtfulness to others while making an individual less likely to put his/her strong decisions forth. Also, individuals do not want to receive any crticism for choosing differently so they prefer to stick with the group ideas and thus reducing their discomfort caused by conflicting ideas.
