What type of government does the USA operate under? Do you think a republic is a preferred system to democracy?Why or why not?

To quote the American Heritage dictionary, definition of a republic is - "a political order in which supreme power lies in the body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them"-U.S.A is that. A common definition of democracy is, " Government by the people excercised directly or though elected representatives "-USA is that as well and hence USA government can be said to be a democratic republic, however USA is a representative democracy than a direct democracy.

In my opninion republic is better over democratic as democratic is a case of Majority over man while written consititutions and rights of republic government protects minority to get overridden by majority. In republic majority cannot impose their will on minority.
