Addiction falls under public health and contribute to public health issues because addiction not only effects the individual who consume the substance but also the family and people around them. When larger number of individuals are engaged in addiction it effects the society in a negative manner as there is a decline in work efficiency of individuals due to physical disabilities due to serious ailments caused by addiction, it causes financial burden on families, it aids in the increase in crime rates etc. Thus, addiction becomes a public issue that is related to the health of the people for better functioning and work efficiency.
