Descartes 2nd very certian test for distinguishing humans from animals states only humans have the complexity adaptibility to reason and adapt to any situation. So can animals reason too or is it just humans?
According to Descartes, humans are comprised of two components, the body and mind. Most of our actions can be explained by unthinking responses, or “passions” to our environment. The mind, on the other hand, is responsible for complex thinking processes and the ability to reason. But animals, Descartes stated, lacked mind, act and interacted with their environment through passions only. They are, therefore, organic “automata” akin to machines and lack the ability for rational thought.
