John B. Watson was a pioneering psychologist who played a critical role in founding the school of behaviorism. His main contribution to the field of psychology, however, was a push towards making the discipline a scientific one. He firmly held that psychology should study phenomenon that is observable and measurable. His predecessors used introspection and other methods to study mental phenomena which did not hold scientific value.From his ideas, a movement towards psychology attempting to employ empirical methods as a purely objective experimental branch of science began.
