Marius was elected to five successive consulships between 104 BC–100 BC.

The term Homo novus or novus homo is the Latin for "new man". It referred to a man who was the first in his family to serve in the Roman Senate or, more specifically, to be elected as consul in ancient Rome.

The optimates were the traditionalist Senatorial majority of the late Roman Republic from about 133 to 27 BC. They belonged to the wealthier classes.They were in favor of extending the power of the Senate.
