Kant’s famous First Formulation of the Categorical Imperative reads, “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.” Kant taught morality as a matter of following maxims of living that reflect absolute laws. “Universal” is a term that allows for no exceptions, and what is universal applies always and everywhere. Lying, for any reason, is universally wrong. Be sure to listen to the audio simulation in this week's lesson before posting in this discussion.

Consider the positions for and against stem cell research. If stem cell research can benefit a large segment of the population (from repairing cells to curing diseases), is it our duty to continue with such research even if there is the potential to abuse such technology? If so, what steps should be taken to prevent such abuses? Apply the Three Primary Schools of Ethics to determine if stem cell research should be allowed or prohibited.

Answer #1

Lying according to universal law is wrong but in my opinion, why someone lies is also very important. For example if one lies to save someone who is close, on is only fulfilling one’s duty which according to Kantian ethics is right because according to Kantian deontological ethics, one should fulfil one’s duty without worrying about the consequences.

Utilitarian ethics suggests that an act would be considered ethical if it increases utility or increase benefits to many people and reduce harm. So, according to Utilitarian, stem cell research is good as it would bring more benefits than harm to many people who struggle with different diseases. Kantian ethics suggests that one should fulfil one’s duty without worrying about the consequences, thus the scientists have a duty to continue with their research and present the world with something which would improve the life of people. Virtue ethics suggests that the person is more important than the action. Scientists are respected in this world as people who make life easier for common men through their scientific discoveries. So according to all the ethical theories, stem cell research should continue and contribute to the wellness and welfare of people.
