Nursing homes are inevitable for some individuals. Some are there for short-term rehabilitation, while others are there for the long term either by choice or there is no other option for them. The reality is that Nursing homes are institutions and like most institutions can leave individuals with a lost sense of home. Many nursing homes have stigmas to them, and some for the right reasons. In any facility where there are large groups of people living together, personal hygiene can cause major health risks such a CA-MRSA. With that in mind health and safety standards have to be at the forefront of any health care/assisted living facility. Along with providing health and safety standards, making patients feel at home as much as possible helps their transition and minimizes the chances that residents will develop “institutionalism”. Mody, Bradley, & Huang, proclaim that in an effort to maintain a homelike environment and enhance the quality of life for older long-stay adults in nursing homes, physical environments are being designed as a “home” rather than a medical institution (2015). More often, you will find nursing homes with furniture and décor similar to that of which one would have at their own home to make them more welcoming. Many nursing homes hire activity coordinators who provide organize weekly, and monthly activities for the residents to participate in that are based around their interest. In doing this, they create a sense of autonomy and socialization that the residents need. Mody, Bradley, & Huang also concur that fostering nurturing and caring relationships between residents, staff and family members is also essential in minimizing the development of “institutionalism”. Some nursing homes have met these standards and some not so much. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services ranks nursing homes based on the quality of care, environment, and sanitary conditions. When making decisions regarding choosing what nursing home is best, researching the ranking would be most helpful.
WHAT DO YOU AGREE ON THIS PAGE OR HOW WOULD COMMENT?
It is true that for choosing a Medical service one is very cautious about that the quality of doctors and the staff the nursing home offers but it is also true that nobody wants a cold and serious environment around the place where a lot of healing is going to happen. All medical care services always have to keep the quality of doctors, the staff and the services up to a standard but those ones will be admired by people more if they standout in terms of caring and giving a feel of the family and home. There are enough studies documented the fact that healing happens faster in a happy, warm and caring environment. This is also a boon for the patients whose families are not there or living away from them.Such a service will add more credibility to the hospital sector.
