RE: Sect. 1 Week 13 DQ 11: House Bill 54

COLLAPSE

4a) I think this bill is fine as is.

4b) Honestly, it has more measures in place to protect patients than I would think to give: Must be a resident, must be 18 or older, must be capable, and must have a terminal disease. The patients are given a 15-day period to dwell on their condition which is a good aspect of the bill. Best of all, the doctor must determine if the patient is making the decision out of their own free will. It is true that this bill would make the death of the patient intentional. However, Brock would make the argument that is not necessarily a bad thing. In both my and Brock’s point of view, self-determination is important even if it means we must allow people to take their own lives.

4c) Dr. Jeanne Anderson made the claim that financial restrictions for medical care might create an incentive for patients to consider euthanasia. I agree that is likely what will happen. I don’t take that as a point against this bill like Dr. Anderson does. If a family is in dire straits and the patient thinks the money it would take to treat them would put their family at risk, then they should have the right to do what they think is necessary.

4d) The thing I want law makers to consider in the bill making process is the patient’s autonomy. We must maximize the freedom of the patient to make choices for themselves. Just because you do not think taking your own life is the correct choice does not mean you can step on the right of self-determination.

Answer #1

The current bill regarding euthanasia has more considerations for patients. This bill advocates more autonomy to patients who are terminally ill to decide for their life. This bill has a provision that gives a fifteen days time for reconsidering their decision for euthanasia. But the major drawback of this bill is that if this bill comes as an act many would critically ill patients would prefer for euthanasia because of their financial situation. Still this bill gives more autonomy for patients to decide for their and take the right step with determination and with positive attitude.

write 3-5 sentences response to this post in your own words . I believe that active voluntary euthanasia is morally permissible as long as it is, in fact, voluntary (I also find active nonvoluntary euthanasia permissible as long as a trusted decision-maker is present). In some cases, I would actually prefer it to passive euthanasia because it would be quicker and (as far as we know) not painful for the patient. In the case of brain death or in other...
