  • Non-verbal communication means when we communicate without the use of spoken language, but rather use gestures, facial expressions, eye contact etc. communicate our message. This form of communication involves unspoken understanding between people depending upon the culture and environment one comes from.
  • Difference between verbal and non-verbal communication:-
  • The basic difference is that verbal involves spoken or written language, whereas non-verbal doesnt involve any spoken or written language.
  • Verbal communication is auditory in nature, whereas non-verbal communication is visual in nature.Verbal communication includes sounds, tones, pitch of a person's voice etc. Non verbal communication includes gestures, body movements, touch etc.
  • Nonverbal communication is able to communicate more than verbal communication. For example, sometimes when a person is really angry, one cannot express it through words by speaking, but expresses it more through their facial expressions and even body language,by being aggressive.
  • Nonverbal communication can be more confusing than verbal communication since people can misinterpret the nonverbal signals, whereas verbal communication is clear and direct.
  • Also in verbal communication, presence of both parties isnt necessary, whereas it is necessary in nonverbal communication. One can talk to the other person on the phone to communicate a message, but a gesture cannot be sent on a phone, the two people need to be present in front of each other to understand it correctly.
  • One similarity between verbal and non verbal communication that both involve transferring and receiving information between people.A combination of both works best, one cannot exist without the other.
