Individual discrimination defines discrimination as the negative treatment of one person by another. Individual discrimination creates problems, but it is primarily an issue between individuals. A professor giving higher grades to White students is an example of individual discrimination. On the other hand, institutional discrimination is much broader and is deeply rooted in our existing social structures. Institutionalized discrimination is the differential treatment of individuals by society and its institutions as a whole, through unequal selection or bias. Examples of institutionalized discrimination include laws and decisions that reflect racism, such as the Plessy vs. Ferguson U.S. Supreme Court case.
