In the Heian period, the agenda of Japanese courtship was to continue the legacy. The sole purpose of marriage during this period was to reproduce children. The off springs would inherent and continue to be at highest ranks. It did not involve elaborate ceremonial procedures. If individuals from the opposite gender saw each other for three consecutive nights, they were considered to be married. Individuals at lower ranks chose to have single partners. Whereas, high-ranked noblemen chose to have multiple partners for more off-springs who would continue the legacy.
