Compare and contrast:
1. Between-subjects with within-subjects designs
2. Small N designs with large N designs.
In what circumstances would you use the within-subjects design and in what circumstances would you use the large N design?
1. In a between-subjects design, the various experimental treatments or levels of the independent variable are given to different groups of subjects. For example, .a researcher wanted to assess the impact of a yoga-based intervention on academic performance. Using a between-subjects design, she could create two groups of participants - one receiving the intervention and the other receiving no intervention - who would then be compared. On the other hand, in within-subjects design, the same subjects perform at all levels of the independent variable. Using the same example as above, in case of the within-subjects design, the researcher would first assess all the participants before the intervention and after the intervention and then find if there has been any significant rise in performance.
