Growing old is different for all catagories of people for many reasons. In some cultures being old is a good thing showing that you have wisdom for being around more while other societies want to stay young and live the younger person lifestyle. Like the book said early in the chapter we are seeing a rise in the average age which means that there are more old people around today than back in the 1990s. With more old people around we are more inclined to change for them, we change the style of buildings, we open the classroom for all ages and many more examples of where we change for the elderly around us. Aging is looked at differently among varying races, elders in the US are more often looked at as a outcast and someone who cannot benefit they younger people whereas in japan the elderly are worshiped for their wisdom and everything they can teach. Social class also changes the way we look at the elderly, it seems in most cases that the lower you are in society the more you care about the elders in your family. We see the poorer people give up more so they can take care of their elderly parents. They let them move in, feed them, pick up their medicine and take them to appointments where it seems that if you have the money you just stick the elderly people in a home and visit every now and then. Gender is not a big part of aging in the US, the only real difference is that the old men re usually more of the wise type where we just picture the old women as a lady who knits and yells at the young folk.
Aging is a natural process, one must understand that we all reach that stage and in certain cultures elderly are looked upon as mentors as we believe they have lived their lives and experienced in different stages of life. They live with the younger generation and it is the son's duty to take care of the aging parents. This is the custom followed and it has been going on for generations. As one gets old they do not want to lose their independance and allow others to take decisions for them or take control of their lives,so many chose to remain or live alone as they age.For some age is just a number, they chose to think young and live young which has a good impact on their longevity.it is the mainly the cultural influences of taking care of the elderly rather being rich or poor in status.
