Researchers hypothesized that immersion bathing in warm water would improve temperature regulation relative to the common practice of sponge bathing. Eight infants where available to test the hypothesis; four were randomly assigned to each of the two conditions (immersion, sponge) during their stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The social worker also taught parents how to take the baby’s temperature 15 minutes after the bath (the dependent variable). Identify a goal of the social worker’s research that led her to focus on the setting for conducting her research. How would you describe the findings if both experiments showed that body temperature was higher for infants in the immersion condition relative to the sponge-bath condition?

The infants randomly assigned to the immersion condition weighed less and were born earlier, on average, than infants in the sponge condition. So, infants group exposed to immersion condition would have comparatively low body fat. This would result in biased/skewed results.

Range of infants should be divided into to groups. Each division should have same average weight. Each group should be having a low and high weight infants included so results are not skewed. One group should be exposed to immersion bath test and the other to sponge bath test.

It is very much possible that room temperature is an important factor which was missed in previous tests.
If both experiments showed that body temperature was higher for infants in the immersion condition relative to the sponge-bath condition, it can be concluded that immersion does impact the body temperature regulation of infants. Longer and uniform exposure can lead to tamperature changes.
