Evaluate the strengths and
limitation of various treatment approaches to obsessive compulsive
disorder
The approaches to treat OCD are the
cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) a type of which is exposure and
response prevention (ERP). and medication management.
- The exposure and response
prevention is carried out by a licensed professional. There is an
average symptom reduction of 50% or 60%. The limitation is that
patients are never cured completely with ERP alone. Many patients
would be dropping out of the treats ment or refuse the treatment.
Also, jet is less acceptable for the society. It is efficient as it
is more tolerable . It could be administered by wide range of
people. There are no side effects.
- Medications: medications may be
causing side effects in many of the patients can only be prescribed
by a psychiatrist or a physician. Some patients might start
becoming over dependent.
