Discuss Repression and Domination as discussed in the book. What type of parenting might each correlate with in our text?
Domination is also known as authoritarian parenting. In authoritarian parenting style, a parent exerts his/her power on the child. The child is ought to listen to what the parent says without questioning. Such parents lay down rules and exert strictness over their children. For instance, a child wants to go out for a sleepover at her friend's place, the parent would straight away say no without reasoning out. The child has to obey to what the parent says. Rebelling or saying anything against the parent's wish, the child would lose her source of happiness as a punishment. This leads to aggression and frustration in the child. Since her parents are so strict, she cannot exhibit her aggression or frustration. This would eventually lead the child to repress her feelings to the unconscious mind. Dominant parenting often leads to repressing of feelings, emotions and thoughts in a child since there is no plausible outlet.
