Answer #1

Answer 1) Sensory memory is the memory for events from the sensory inputs which we encounter every now and then in our surrounding. It is the raw material which forms the basis of any sort of memory stored by the human mind, it is a relatively automatic form of memory and has a duration of several seconds.

1. Features of Sensory Memory:

a) The storage of sensory information provides a microcosm of the memory system as a whole.

b) It begins with the systems of iconic and echoic memory that store visual and auditory information over a matter of milliseconds, as part of the processes involved in perception.

2. Functions of Sensory Memory:

a.) Sensory memory receives sensory information from the environment.

b.) It enables perceptual continuity for the world around us.

3. Strengths of Sensory Memory:

a) Our sensory memory works very quickly. It helps people to make important decisions before they analyze the situation consciously.

b) The capacity of sensory memory is different for different types of SM; however, it is considered to be quite large. The capacity is unique for each person. The approximate capacity of iconic memory is up to 12 items. For comparing, short-term memory’s capacity is approximately 7 items.

4. Weaknesses of Sensory Memory:

a) Some information is not transferred to STM. It is forgotten.

5. Examples of Sensory Memory:

Sensory is brief memory that allow people to keep the impressions of the sensory information they received from the external stimulus, it is also often known as the first stage of memory that involves registering a tremendous amount of information about the environment, but only for a very brief period. Purpose of sensory memory is to retain information long enough for it to be recognized.

a) Your ability to see motion can be attributed to sensory memory. Visual process in the brain works like watching a cartoon, you see one frame at a time.
