In our modern sport culture, we see a continuation of Western cultural hegemony via the X games and beach volleyball. Sports provide a narrative about a culture's values and history. Why should we be concerned about the disappearance of sports that are unique and native to other cultures, if at all? Or is this a natural progression of civilization?
I believe that we should be concerned about the disappearance of sports that are unique and native to cultures. We can hardly imagine England without cricket or Japan without sumo wrestlers. At the same time, however, cultural change is another human universal that indeed represents the natural progression of civilization. Over the millennia, many cultural nuances have emerged, flourished, declined, and disappeared and sports are not an exception to that. With globalization, we seem to the heading towards a more unified culture, dominated by the Westen world but nonetheless adopted by other cultures in the world as well.
