From birth, human beings define themselves with respect to the context of their social interactions. Our sense of identity is developed by understanding ourselves in terms of how we are perceived by others. In other words, identity, or self, is the result of learning to see ourselves as others do. The looking-glass self comprises three main components. First, we imagine how we appear to others. Next, we react to what we feel their judgements of our appearance maybe. Finally, we develop our self and identity based on our perceptions. The looking glass self is congruent with the symbolic interaction sociological perspective.
