Ryle critiques the conception of the mind as distinct from the body, and a rejects of the theory that mental states are separable from physical states. According to him, Cartesian dualism makes a basic category mistake, because it attempts to analyze the relation between mind and body as if they were terms of the same logical category. Ryle stated that Cartesian dualism is fundamentally false because it confuses two logical-types, or categories, as being compatible when they actually belong to another.
