In what circumstances would you use the within-subjects design and in what circumstances would you use the large N design?
Within subjects design is used when all the subjects in the study are exposed to same experimental conditions or given same interventions. For example, a teacher introduces group discussions before an exam. The exam results are compared with the exams previously given by the students without having group discussions.
Large N design is used when there are large number of cases. In such design, the whole population is taken for the study instead of selecting a subset as a sample. For example, the entire population of patients admitted in the emergency ward of a hospital for one month is considered as a population of the study instead os selecting a sample.
