What are some of the advantages of Multiple Regression? How is regression with a single variable the same and different from a correlation?

Answer #1

In psychology, multiple regression is an analysis technique that is used in the domain of research. It is used to study the effect of independent variables (predictors) on the dependent variables. There can be several predictors.

In a single variable regression there is the effect of one on the other that is studied. The commonality that this shares with correlation is the use of two variables to understand the phenomenon, but the difference is that correlation does not insinuate causality, which regression aims to uncover.

Regression aims to probe the relationship that the two variables share and the interdependence if any.

Whereas, correlation is the extent to which two variables relate with each other.

Regression ____ (b values) indicate how much influence each independent variable has on the dependent variable. Regression analysis serves two main purposes: to define the relationship between variables and to ____ values of the dependent variable using what we know about the existing correlation between the variables. The coefficient of multiple determination, R^2, is interpreted as the percentage of ____ in the dependent variable that is explained by the independent variable.

Multiple Regression A biologist believes that there is a quadratic relationship between the weight and age of fish, but that there will be different quadratic relationships for male and female fish. Write down a single regression model which explains the weight of a fish as a quadratic function of the fish’s age, and which allows for different quadratic relationships (constant, linear and quadratic terms) for male and female fish. Define each variable carefully.
