12. What is Reintegrative Shaming and how does it work? Explain how this theory falls under the rubric of Labeling Theories.
Reintegrative Shaming theory suggests that the sanction by the criminal justice system shames the offender’s behavior that caused the deviant behavior and not his personal traits. This shaming strengthens the bond between the offender and the community. It suggests that the sentence for the deviant behavior changes the person and brings him back as a law abiding citizen. It’s an alternative to the labeling theory which suggests that power structures such as police, schools, justice system etc. define the deviant behavior and brand people as deviants. This theory also suggests that offenders will be separated and labeled as deviants. Sometimes, this branding and stereotyping of people will also contribute to their future behavior.
