What does a serotonin reuptake inhibitor do to the activity of a synapse? An MAOI? Describe the changes to the synapse that occur as a result of either of these compounds.

Answer #1

Serotonin as a type of indolamina which is found in central nevous system. It generate excitatory or inhibitory effect during the synaptic transmission. It plays important role to regulation of sleep, mood , anxiety and appetite.Serotonin reuptake inhibitor block the reuptake of serotonin, leaving more serotonin available in the synapse to bind with receptor sites. An MAOI is the brain's cleanup worker because its primary function is to break down the neurotransmitters nonrepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine, these three neurotransmitters most involved in control of mood. When serotonin reuptake inhibitor take changes to the synapse then level of serotonin levels will be low due to which low level of mood increase .It also effective for depression, anxiety and obsessive- compulsive disorder .
