Answer #1

Two major arguments offered by Rachels that leads to be conclusion that ethical relativism is mistaken are as follows:

  1. If we held cultural relativism, we could no longer say that the customs of other societies are morally wrong. For example, the Holocaust is justified because there is no basis in the nature of things to ever say that a cultural practice is ethically preferable to the other.
  2. If we held cultural relativism, we could decide whether actions are right or wrong just by consulting the standards of our society. What makes something wrong would therefore be what other people say it is wrong.

1. The free radical chlorination reaction of 2,3-dimethylbutane leads to the production of two major monochlorinated products 1-choloro-2,3-dimethylbutane and 2-chloro-2,3-dimethylbutane. When run through a gas chromatograph,it was determined that the product distrubution was 51.7% 1-chloro-2,3-dimethylbutane and 48.3% 2-chloro-2,3-dimethylbutane. If we assign the primary H's a reactivity of 1.0, what is the relative reactivity of the tertiary H's. 2. A free radical bromination of 2,3, dimethybutane( same as above) will give almost exclusively the 2-bromo-2,3-dimethylbutane. Use the Hammond Postulate to explain...

Brought to Europe by the explorer James Cook in 1771, a tattoo is made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin. Though that does not sound particularly appealing, tattoos have become quite popular in the US. According to a survey by Pew Research in 2008, 14% of all Americans have at least one tattoo, and an astounding 36% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 25. In thinking about the decision to have a tattoo,...
